Briefly introduces the gas-liquid contact mechanism of metal packings.

Gas-liquid Contact Mechanism of Metal Packing

Unlike ceramic packings, metal packings have poor surface wettability, and gas-liquid contact relies more on structural design to enhance it.

Liquid Film Formation

Metal surfaces generally have low hydrophilicity (contact angle 40-70°), making it difficult for the liquid film to spread uniformly; it easily shrinks into droplets or streams. Insufficient liquid volume leads to dry zones, significantly reducing efficiency.

Gas Flow Characteristics

Random Packings: Channels are randomly curved, resulting in strong local turbulence. Thin metal walls and large openings result in low pressure drop.

Ordered Packings: Regular corrugated channels generate vortices at intersections, enhancing gas-liquid mixing. Perforated structures can break the laminar boundary layer.

Enhancement Measures

Metal packings compensate for insufficient wettability through structural design:

Measures

Effects

Embossing/Pickling

Increases roughness and improves wettability

Punching (2-5mm)

Enhances lateral mixing and reduces wall flow

Windowing (Linger)

Disrupts the gas-liquid interface, similar to Pall rings
