Corrugated Metal Perforated Plate and Corrugated Metal Wire Mesh
Corrugated Metal Perforated Plate and Corrugated Metal Wire Mesh
Orifice plate corrugated packing and wire mesh corrugated packing are the two main types of structured packings. Orifice plate corrugated packing is made from perforated thin metal sheets, while wire mesh corrugated packing is made from woven metal wire mesh. They differ significantly in structure, performance, and application scenarios.
Structure and Materials
The base material of orifice plate corrugated packing is a thin metal sheet, approximately 0.1-0.3 mm thick, with perforations (2-5 mm in diameter) on the surface. The main materials are stainless steel, carbon steel, and titanium.
The base material of wire mesh corrugated packing is a woven metal mesh, approximately 0.1-0.3 mm in diameter, with a rougher, mesh-like surface. The main material is stainless steel.
Orifice plate corrugated packing is made by punching and pressing thin metal sheets, while wire mesh corrugated packing involves first weaving metal wires into a mesh, then pressing and heat-treating to set the shape.
Performance Comparison
Performance Indicators | Orifice Plate Corrugated Packing | Wire Mesh Corrugated Packing |
Specific Surface Area | 100-500 m²/m³ | 250-1000 m²/m³ |
Porosity | 90%-98% | 85%-95% |
Pressure Drop | Low | High |
Mass Transfer Efficiency | Medium | Very High |
Anti-clogging Capacity | Good | Poor |
Cost | Low | High |
Corrugated wire mesh has a larger surface area and higher efficiency, but it also has higher pressure drop, higher cost, and poorer anti-clogging properties.
Applicable Scenarios
Scenario | Orifice plate corrugated | Wire mesh corrugated |
Atmospheric pressure distillation (high throughput) | Preferred | Generally not preferred |
High vacuum distillation (<1kPa) | Optional | Preferred |
Absorption (CO₂, H₂S, etc.) | Preferred | Generally not preferred |
Separation of heat-sensitive substances | Optional | Preferred |
Containing solid particles | Preferred | Not applicable |
High purity separation | Generally not preferred | Preferred |
Orifice plate corrugations are suitable for atmospheric or pressurized distillation, absorption washing, high-throughput processes, and applications containing small amounts of solid particles. Wire mesh corrugations are suitable for high-vacuum distillation, separation of heat-sensitive substances, low liquid holdup requirements, and separation of high-purity products.
Selection Recommendations
Primary considerations | Selection |
Pressure drop priority | Orifice plate corrugated |
Efficiency priority | wire mesh corrugated |
Cost priority | Orifice plate corrugated |
High vacuum (<0.5kPa) | wire mesh corrugated |
Containing solid particles | Orifice plate corrugated |
Combined Use: In large distillation columns, perforated plates (anti-clogging, high throughput) can be used at the bottom, while wire mesh corrugated plates (high separation precision) can be used at the top, balancing the high load requirements at the bottom and the high purity requirements at the top.
