Moisture-proof Storage of Activated Alumina
Moisture-proof Storage of Activated Alumina
Activated alumina has extremely strong hygroscopic properties. Improper storage will cause it to prematurely absorb moisture from the air, leading to a decrease in adsorption capacity or even inactivation. Therefore, moisture protection is the primary task in storing activated alumina.
Moisture Absorption Principle
Activated alumina has a surface rich in hydroxyl groups and a specific surface area as high as 200-400 m²/g, exhibiting a strong hydrogen bond adsorption capacity for water molecules. In ordinary environments, it rapidly adsorbs water vapor from the air, increasing its weight and filling its pores with moisture. Activated alumina that has not been stored with moisture protection must be reactivated before use; otherwise, its adsorption effect will be significantly reduced.
Storage Environment Requirements
Project | Requirements | Specifications |
Relative Humidity | ≤40% | optimally controlled at 30%-50% |
Temperature | 5-40℃ | optimally 10-30℃ |
Location | Indoor warehouse | dry, well-ventilated, and free of standing water |
Floor | Off-the-ground storage | use pallets or wooden boards, direct contact with the ground is prohibited |
In high humidity environments (relative humidity > 60%), activated alumina absorbs moisture rapidly. Long-term storage may cause moisture to fill the pores, affecting its performance.
Packaging Requirements
Woven bags + inner plastic bag liner: The inner bag must be tightly sealed. Suitable for regular storage and transportation.
Ton bags + moisture-proof liner: The seal must be tight. Suitable for large-volume storage.
Sealed iron/plastic drums: The lid must be tightened. Suitable for long-term storage or export.
Packaging Essentials
The inner plastic bag liner must be intact and tightly sealed.
Damaged packaging should be replaced or repaired promptly.
Double packaging is recommended for long-term storage.
Storage Management
Post-opening handling: Immediately reseal the inner bag after each use, expel the air, and tie it tightly. It is recommended to use the product as soon as possible after use to avoid repeated opening.
Regular inspection: Check the packaging monthly for damage and signs of moisture accumulation or clumping.
First-in, first-out (FIFO): Manage by batch; use the first batch received to avoid long-term stockpiling.
Stacking Requirements: Stacking height should not exceed 2 meters to prevent deformation and damage to the bottom packaging.
Summary
The moisture-proof storage of activated alumina can be summarized as: sealed and moisture-proof, stored off the ground, first-in, first-out (FIFO), and regular inspection. It can be restored to its original state after becoming damp, but the temperature must not exceed 350℃. Proper storage management is a prerequisite for ensuring adsorption performance.
